The brand-new SilverFast® Resolution Target in combination with SilverFast software is a simple way to determine just what the maximum resolution of your particular scanner is! Obtain scans with the best possible crispness and sharpness. An optical, (also called physical resolution) has always been a requirement in high-end scanning for best quality. Unfortunately today with low priced desktop scanners the term "resolution" has become unclear.
As a second important application, the target helps you find the optimum sharpness settings for a chosen resolution. You can also find the best compromise for your scanner between high resolution and sharpness and determine which parts of your flatbed scanner are scanned particularly sharply or blurry. The SilverFast Resolution Target is equally well suited for flatbed or film scanners.
This target has a size of 11,3 x 10 cm. In this size it can directly put on the glass surface of a flatbed scanner. Die largest element 1 of the group -2 corresponds to a resolution of 13 ppi (2mm thickness of a bar). The smallest element on the target is the element 6 of the group 7, which corresponds to a resolution of 11586 ppi. For film scanners the target can be cut to the desired size. For instance, if you cut it to the 35mm size of 36x24 mm and put it into a 35mm slide mount you still have the elements from the group 0 (starting with 51 ppi) until the group 6 (11586 ppi) on the target.
Procedure
- Scan the USAF-1951 test target with the scanner's highest possible optical resolution
- Save the scanned image and open it with image editing software
- Zoom into 100% view
- Analyse the horizontal and vertical black lines if they distinguish from the background
- See the lines-corresponding resolution from the resolution table
You can find detailed information about determining the effective resolution with the USAF-1951 test chart on our website about
resolution of film scanners.
